Depth of Field + Emotion = A Real Skinner

BC coach Al Skinner shows his disagreement with a call

I struggled really hard to decide on what picture should have the privilege of going up here first. I found this one fitting for a few reasons.

The man who really got me into photography is Ian Thomas and I owe a lot of what I have learned to him. It was winter break a little over a year ago and Ian called me up and asked if I wanted to shoot the BC-Kansas basketball game with him.

I could not say no to the situation and I'd like to apologize to Liz as I think I even broke off a lunch date with her... :0

Kansas won the national championship that year and needless to say BC was struggling against them. So I started to focus my lens on things elsewhere besides the players. Perhaps get some candid shots of the mascots and kids or the coaches.

On what I believe was a blocking foul on BC, Al Skinner really let the reff have it. I was already holding the 70-200mm in my hands as opposed to the 24-70mm and I fired off this shot.

It has quickly become one of my personal favorites. I absolutely love the depth of field, notice the reff slightly out of focus...makes Skinner pop out at you just that much more. His emotion is so clear it can really depict how that game went as a whole.

Please leave as many comments as you want! I welcome both criticism and praise haha, as much as I want to showcase my work I'm always looking to improve.

  1. It's unfortunate that the railing is jutting into Skinner's neck, but it's a small price to pay for the framing you get from the ref and the duo in yellow—a great angle.

    Looks great, Mike!

  2. Hey Bud,

I've looked at this shot a few times over the past couple days and been thinking of how it could be made better. I think the best thing to do would be to crop it down from the upper left corner. I realize you're trying to include the two guys in the superfan shirts behind Al and that they're also showing their displeasure at the call, but your audience has to look closely to see that since their poses are rather awkward. If the focus of the image is the interaction btw Al (lots of emotion) and the ref (emotionless), anything else is kind of a distraction. From the left I'd crop to just before the black url in the EMC ad on the hockey bench and from the top just before the ref's head. Tell me what you think...

    Best,
    IT
